The Seven Sages of Rome. IN THIS WAY ARE TREATED THE STORIES QF THE SEVEN WISE MEN OF ROME, FROM THE WORK OF LLEWELYN, THE PRIEST. The Seven Sages of Rome is a MIDDLE ENGLISH verse ROMANCE that exists in several versions, ranging from roughly 2, lines to about 4, lines. The earliest known version was written in Kent in the early 14th century, but that text is based on a French text from about called Les Sept Sages de.

Versions that emerged in Eurasia east of Rome, called the Book of Sindibad, in almost all cases don’t name the sages.[4] The western branch came to be known as the Seven Sages of Rome.

Many of these versions name the seven sages. The Society of the Seven Sages (founded in ) is a loosely-knit, informal group of scholars and students interested in the Oriental and European versions of the medieval Seven Sages of Rome cycle of stories. The Society has held research meetings at irregular intervals, has published a bibliography (), and circulates an annual.
